EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee calls for the start of negotiations on Moldova's accession to the European Union

The EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee calls for the start of negotiations on Moldova's accession to the European Union and the creation of a sanctions regime for oligarchs who want to destabilise Moldova. To this end, the members of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee (PCA) adopted a declaration in Brussels today.

"The Republic of Moldova and its citizens have demonstrated that they want to be part of the European Union. Moldova has made great progress in the last year towards the EU, despite the challenges it faces and the threats from the Russian Federation. That is why we need to give Moldova more clarity on the steps that follow now, after the granting of candidate status in 2022. For this reason, we call for the start of negotiations on Moldova's accession to the European Union as soon as possible, as soon as the nine recommendations made by the European Commission in 2022 are fulfilled," said MEP Siegfried Muresan, co-chair of the EU-Republic of Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, today.

According to the official, Russia is strongly supported in this effort by oligarchs in the Republic of Moldova who are using people and orchestrating protests to destabilise the country.

"I want to make sure that all assets of these oligarchs in EU countries are frozen so that they can no longer finance false protests and try to corrupt the institutions of the Republic of Moldova," Siegfried Muresan said.

The MEP expressed his conviction that the relationship between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova will become increasingly close as accession negotiations begin.

"To this end, we call for the declaration adopted today for the creation of a special unit for the Republic of Moldova in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations," Mureșan said.

The document unanimously adopted today by the CPA members also calls for the full liberalisation of trade between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Single Market as soon as possible and increased financial support from the EU.

The declaration was adopted at the 13th meeting of the Parliamentary Association Committee, which took place today in the European Parliament in Brussels and brought together members of the European Parliament and the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the Government of the Republic of Moldova as well as the European Commission and the European External Action Service.
