Stoltenberg: Russia seeks to freeze war in winter ahead of spring offensive

Russia is seeking to freeze fighting in Ukraine over winter to build up its forces ahead of a new, larger assault in spring, the Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg stated today, AFP reports.

He said Alliance members continue to provide "unprecedented" arms and support to Ukraine, despite concerns that the West could run out of stockpiles.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Russia could seek a false exit from the war in Ukraine, which would not produce a lasting peace, but would allow its troops to regroup and attack Ukraine again.

Antony Blinken also said that only about a third of the 300,000 Russians called up for active military service were fully mobilised, underscoring the poor capabilities and ill-equipped for winter of those who joined the fighting in Ukraine.
