The quake occurred 14 km from Khvoy, West Azerbaijan Province, in Iran, an area close to the Turkish border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Turkey is still dealing with the aftermath of February's devastating earthquakes that struck the south and killed nearly 50,000 people.

On Thursday, an earthquake struck southeastern Turkey, in the same area devastated by earthquakes in early February.

The 5.3-magnitude quake had its epicentre in Kahramanmaras province, as has been the case with recent earthquakes, the AFAD disaster management authority said. A DPA reporter in the city of Gaziantep reported feeling strong vibrations.

On 6 February, a 7.7-magnitude quake was followed just an hour later by another 7.6-magnitude quake that shook southeast Turkey and northern Syria. In total, nearly 57,000 people lost their lives and millions were left homeless.
