The Constitutional Court announced the date it will examine the constitutionality of the Șor Party
The Constitutional Court announces that the application will be examined from 10 May until 17 May in the Court's courtroom. "We mention that only invited persons will have access to the Constitutional Court's sitting room," the institution said. The sitting will be broadcast live online.
The government filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court last November on the constitutionality of the Șor political party. According to the authorities, there are arguments showing that, through all its activities so far, the party has acted contrary to the principles of the rule of law and endangers the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova. The Ministry of Justice's initiative was described by the Șor Party as "yet another serious abuse by the PAS government".
Subsequently, the Constitutional Court asked the Venice Commission for an opinion on the matter. The European institution stated in its opinion that outlawing a political party violates fundamental human rights and freedoms and that such a decision should be legal, legitimate and proportionate. The Constitutional Court is to decide whether outlawing this party is justified, the Venice Commission opinion states.
The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office has opened several criminal cases concerning the illegal financing of the Șor Party. The vice-president of the Șor Party, Marina Tauber, was detained last July after lawmakers stripped her of her immunity. The authorities also accuse the party of being part of a Moscow plan to destabilise the domestic situation, including by staging protests.
