Klaus Iohannis, at the meeting with Charles Michel: The Republic of Moldova is the target of threats and hybrid actions
President Klaus Iohannis received the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, at the Cotroceni Palace on Monday. The two discussed the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Republic of Moldova and Romania's accession to Schengen, Digi 24 reports.
"Today we discussed the subject that has dominated the agenda of the European Council over the past year, namely the war in Ukraine. We agreed that now is not the time to hesitate in maintaining unity and solidarity with Ukraine, and support must be maintained and strengthened on all levels: political - including by advancing the European path - economic, military, humanitarian. We agreed today that the destabilising action of the Russian Federation is not limited to Ukraine. We presented to the President of the European Council our assessment of the situation in the Republic of Moldova, which is currently the target of threats and hybrid actions aimed at derailing its European course", said Klaus Iohannis.
The leader at Cotroceni says that in the current security context, the Republic of Moldova "needs the full support of the European Union.
"At the European Council meeting last week, we mandated the European Commission to present a support package for the Republic of Moldova before our next meeting in June. At the same time, the European Union is preparing a civilian mission to provide concrete support in the fight against hybrid threats. We also continue to promote our proposal for a sanctions regime dedicated to the situation in the Republic of Moldova, in response to the destabilising actions of the Russian Federation," said Klaus Iohannis.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will visit Chisinau tomorrow. The information was confirmed today by the European official, who said that in Chisinau he will reconfirm the European Union's support for our country.
