Owners of dogs, cats and ferrets will be required to vaccinate their animals against rabies
Animal owners, veterinarians and representatives of local and central public authorities will have the opportunity to apply sanitary-veterinary measures both in the case of suspicion and in the case of confirmation of rabies in animals from a holding, locality or area, as well as in hunting funds . Also, the owners of dogs, cats and ferrets will be obliged to vaccinate the animals, for prophylactic purposes. A decision in this sense was adopted by the Government.
"Rabies is one of the most neglected diseases in the world. Cross-sector collaboration is essential to address and combat this problem. For this purpose, measures have been developed that will train the whole society, so that every citizen is responsible for public and animal health", stated the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Vladimir Bolea.
In the period of 2012-2021, in the Republic of Moldova, 1156 cases of rabies in wild and domestic animals were registered. During the reference period, more than 90% of the diseases were detected in cattle, dogs, foxes and cats. To date, 20 species of animals positive for the rabies virus were detected in the Republic of Moldova.
