Modern system of sustainable waste management in three districts of the Republic of Moldova. EBRD offers a grant of 5.6 million euros

About 185,000 people from Nisporeni, Ungheni and Călărași will benefit from a modern system of sustainable waste management. In this sense, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has earmarked 5.6 million euros as non-reimbursable financing.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Environment, this financing complements a sovereign loan of 25 million euros granted by the EBRD to the Government of the Republic of Moldova, part of a wider financing package, with an additional loan from the European Investment Bank and investment grants from other bilateral donors.

"The Eastern European Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership Fund (E5P) in Moldova totals 50 million euros and includes a contribution of 1 million euros from Moldova. The European Union is the biggest contributor, with 28.95 million euros. Other donors include the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Sweden", reports the quoted source.

The Ministry of the Environment also states that this is the first multi-regional solid waste management project in the country and will finance the purchase of assets for the collection and transportation of waste, such as waste containers and collection vehicles, as well as the construction of sorting infrastructure and solid waste treatment such as landfills and material sorting and treatment facilities.

To date, the EBRD has invested over 2 billion euros in the Republic of Moldova through 160 projects, with 52% of its portfolio in sustainable infrastructure.
