Mircea Geoană's mandate at the head of NATO extended for another year: "We will continue to strengthen democratic values and the freedom to think and choose our own destiny"
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has extended Mircea Geoană's term as the alliance's deputy secretary general for another year, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu announced on Twitter on Friday, as quoted by Agerpres.

"Mircea Geoană has been an outstanding Deputy Secretary General of NATO and a great support to me personally at a critical time for Euro-Atlantic security," Stoltenberg said in the message released by the spokeswoman.
"His political competence, expertise and balance in working under pressure continue to be strong assets for our transatlantic Alliance. In recognition of his service, we have extended his term as Deputy Secretary General for one year, until mid-October 2024. I thank Mircea for his dedication and look forward to continuing our work together," adds the NATO Secretary General.
Mircea Geoană says he is honoured to continue his work as NATO Deputy Secretary General teaming up with Jens Stoltenberg. Geoană thanks Stoltenberg for his confidence.
"At a time of great complexity, we will continue, whenever and together, to defend the more than 1 billion citizens of the member states, to strengthen democratic values and the freedom to think and choose our own destinies," Mircea Geoană wrote on his Facebook account.
Geoană considers today's decision, like his appointment in 2019, as "an encouragement for all Romanians to aim higher". The NATO official expresses his conviction that this is a moment when "Romania must have the boldness and wisdom to seize the strategic opportunities that geopolitical changes offer".
