EU Ambassador: Chisinau must make every effort to clean up justice and to fight corruption

Cleaning up the judiciary and the fight against corruption, which is among the conditions imposed on the Republic of Moldova by the European Commission, is a difficult task, but Chisinau must make every effort to progress in this segment, the Ambassador of the EU in the Republic of Moldova, Janis Mazeiks said in an interview for Radio Moldova. According to the official, if the Republic of Moldova does not meet the nine conditions, they will not be able to start negotiations for accession.

"Every time we provide support, it is conditional on the country having to strengthen its capacities, including financial mechanisms. These things are the government's plans, and we are providing an additional incentive to speed up their implementation. Last year, the European Commission published nine measures that the Republic of Moldova must fulfill, most of them related to cleaning up the judiciary and the fight against corruption. This is a difficult task, but it is important that the government makes every effort to make progress. We will look forward to seeing good progress until the current assessment.

The sequence of events will be the following: first of all, the Chisinau Government will have to inform us about the progress made after it obtained candidate country status, on June 23 last year, and also since January, when we evaluated the implementation application of the acquis communautaire. The European Union will then prepare a report to be published in October. Based on these reports, the European Council will decide the next steps", said Ambassador Janis Mazeiks.

We remind that the European Parliament has proposed to the European Commission and the member states that, once the accession negotiations begin, as the negotiation chapters are completed, the candidate countries can already integrate European policies and have access to European funds and the European market.
