The Republic of Moldova could receive $750,000 from NATO funds
The Republic of Moldova could receive $750,000 from NATO funds to strengthen the country's defence system. The announcement was made by the head of Romanian diplomacy Bogdan Aurescu before the start of the NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels on 4-5 April.
The Romanian diplomat announced that Ukraine would also receive $800,000. Bogdan Aurescu stressed that the North Atlantic Alliance must support vulnerable partners in the region to counter the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation.
"President Maia Sandu visited Bucharest and we discussed with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Klaus Iohannis how to make the Republic of Moldova more resilient and secure in the face of Russia's destabilizing actions. Romania will commit and announce that we will contribute more to defence capacity building programmes. We will provide eight hundred thousand USD for Ukraine and seven hundred and fifty thousand USD for the Republic of Moldova to improve their defence capabilities", Bogdan Aurescu said.
Earlier this year, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană announced that the North Atlantic Alliance was offering Moldova a non-lethal assistance package. The decision was taken at a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels in February.
According to the official, the assistance package is a response to Chisinau's request and is intended to help the Republic of Moldova face the challenges of the hybrid war and the security crisis in the region.
