NATO to develop a multi-year strategic programme to support and modernise Ukraine's armed forces
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has agreed to start developing a multi-year strategic programme to support and modernise Ukraine's armed forces to NATO standards, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after a ministerial meeting in Brussels. He also said the programme would help Kiev integrate more effectively into Euro-Atlantic structures.
"When the war is over, we have to make sure that President Putin can no longer threaten European security. That is why we must give Ukraine the opportunity to defend itself against this aggression in the future. We have agreed to start developing a multi-year strategic programme to support Ukraine. The programme will also help Ukraine in the process of Euro-Atlantic integration, because Ukraine's future lies in NATO and the EU," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
He underlined that NATO will continue to support its other partners, including the Republic of Moldova, to cope with pressure from the Russian Federation.
