NATO member Turkey is trying to persuade Russia and Ukraine to resume peace talks, hoping to capitalize on diplomatic efforts made last year. The Russian foreign minister, who last visited Turkey in June, is due to discuss the grain deal with Turkish officials, which the Russian foreign ministry said was extended "as a gesture of goodwill for another 60 days".

Turkey requested a 120-day extension, according to the original agreement. Ukraine is one of the largest grain producers in the world.
