NATO Military Committee Chairman: Romania is a guarantor of Black Sea security and will continue to support Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia
Romania is a guarantor of Black Sea security and will continue to support Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia affected by Russia's war against Kiev, NATO Military Committee Chairman Robert Bauer told a press conference during his visit to Bucharest.
According to him, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation will support Ukraine as long as necessary to stop the Russian expansion.
"Romania also plays a key role in stabilising the countries in the Alliance's neighbourhood, for example by supporting Moldova and Georgia through financial contributions to NATO funds dedicated to strengthening their resilience and defence capabilities. And it is very important for people to understand that we must continue to support Ukraine for as long as we have to, because this is not only about Ukraine and Russia's much larger ambitions," said Robert Bauer.
Chief of Defence Staff Daniel Petrescu stressed at the same press conference the importance of strengthening regional military capacity to ensure the security of the Black Sea area and to face the threats of the Russian Federation. Moreover, he stated that Romania's actions will be defensive only.
"We have an ongoing war near our borders. These are threats that we must be prepared for and we are preparing to respond. There are more than 30 armament programmes that we are implementing, programmes through which we intend to spend wisely the 2.5% of the Gross Domestic Product allocated to defence. All these measures are defensive, they are designed to preserve regional security and stability," said Daniel Petrescu.
In the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, NATO member states and partners are organising military training exercises on land, sea and air. And the multinational exercise "Sea Shield 2023", hosted by Romania in the Black Sea basin, recently ended. 3 400 military personnel and representatives of several institutions from Romania's defence system, as well as from 12 other NATO allies and partner states, including the Republic of Moldova, took part in these actions to increase the level of interoperability between participating forces.
