"The Leopard tanks and 20 transport vehicles have been embarked in the port of Santander (north) and are heading for Ukraine, where they will arrive in 5-6 days," Margarita Robles told the press.

"There are four other Leopard tanks under repair and when the repairs are completed they will also leave for Ukraine," she added.

Madrid had announced that these tanks would be sent as part of European states' aid to Ukraine, a country invaded by Russian forces.

After resisting Russian attacks on its eastern front, the Ukrainian army is preparing a counter-offensive for this spring or summer.

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched an unprovoked and unjustified aggression against neighbouring Ukraine, but claims to be conducting a "special military operation to denazify" the neighbouring country and protect the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine.

Kiev has announced that Russian troops must leave the entire territory of Ukraine, including regions annexed last year and the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014, before discussing a possible peace plan with Moscow.
