Sanctions for people who try to destabilise Moldova. EU foreign ministers reach agreement

European Union foreign ministers have reached an agreement in principle to create a special regime of sanctions for people who try to destabilise the Republic of Moldova, says MEP Siegfried Mureșan.

"It is important that this sanctions mechanism enters into force as soon as possible and is applied as harshly as possible. This is the only way we can really help Moldova in the fight against those who want the country to stay in place, dependent on Russia and easily controllable", said Siegfried Muresan.

Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu also welcomed the political agreement. He said that Romania is already working with the Moldovan authorities on the first list of persons to be sanctioned under the sanctions regime, which will be proposed after the completion of the last procedural-formal steps related to the sanctions regime.

Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu also welcomed today's adoption of the decision to establish the EU Civilian Partnership Mission to Moldova (EUPM Moldova) and expressed his hope that the rapid implementation of this decision will increase the resilience of Moldova. Romania will support the functioning of this Mission, including with staff.

Today in Luxembourg, the Foreign Ministers of the European Union Member States met - Foreign Affairs Council.
