Today marks International Labour Day
Today marks International Labour Day, celebrated in many countries, including the Republic of Moldova. Budget workers will also have days off on 8 and 9 May. Monday 8 May will be made up on Saturday 13 May.
The National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova is organising a rally at the Railwaymen's Palace of Culture, dedicated to the International Day of Workers' Solidarity with the slogan: "Decent work - European future!"
For most countries in Europe, 1 May is a public holiday. In 1889, the Congress of the Socialist International decreed 1 May as International Labour Day, in memory of the victims of the Chicago general strike, and the day is commemorated by workers' demonstrations.
Over time, May Day became the holiday of labour movements in most countries of the world, with demonstrations gaining momentum as the authorities agreed with trade unions that the day should be free.
