Elections in ATU Gagauzia. Expert: The results of this election were predictable

Voters in Gagauzia will go to the polls once again after no candidate for Bashkan of Gagauzia received more than 50 percent of the vote. According to the preliminary results published by the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia, Grigori Uzun, supported by the Party of Socialists, came in first place, while the candidate of the "ȘOR" party, Evghenia Guțul, came in second, with a difference of only 13 votes.

The second round of the elections for Bashkan of Gagauzia will most likely take place on 14 May, Iana Covalenco, chairwoman of the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia, told Radio Moldova. According to her, about 57.8% of the total voters turned out at the polls, which means that the elections are valid.

"The Central Electoral Commission this week will name the date of the second round of the Bashkan elections. As far as the People's Assembly is concerned, the elections have been completed and one candidate has emerged from the first round. In constituency 17, Ianioglo Petru was elected, and in constituency 9 - Savastin Mihail", said Iana Covalenco.

Local journalist Mihail Sirkeli told our radio station that voters in the region made a predictable choice.

"The "Sor" party uses all methods, which convinced the voters of the region to vote for the candidacy, which nobody in Gagauzia knows about. This shows not only something about Gagauzia, but also about the Republic of Moldova. I believe that the " Sor " party has every chance to win the second round, because it is an organized party, it uses the messages that people buy. And we should not forget one thing that the electorate in Gagauzia has long been corrupt and that created very good conditions for the "Sor" party to come here", says Mihail Sirkeli.

At the same time, political analyst Nicolae Negru told Radio Moldova that Grigori Uzun, supported by the Party of Socialists, has the best chances in the second round. Nicolae Negru says that it matters a lot which option Moscow will choose and which of the candidates it will support.

"It seems to me that Gagauz people are being lured into a false trail and the results of this vote prove this great disorientation. I assume that the other candidates will prefer Grigore Uzun, but I do not exclude that Sor will invest and try to further corrupt some candidates who lost the elections, certainly the voter", Nicolae Negru pointed out.

According to national legislation, the second round of elections is to be held 14 days after the first round. Also, within 72 hours after the final election results are established, the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia will submit to the Comrat Court of Appeal the documents necessary to confirm the mandates of Petru Ianioglo and Mihail Savastin, elected by constituencies.
