Janis Mazeiks: EU continues to support Moldova in strengthening security sector

The Republic of Moldova needs to address security issues more comprehensively, because with the outbreak of war in Ukraine, risks and threats to national security have increased, said the Director of the Intelligence and Security Service, Alexandru Musteață at the operational meeting of the European Union Security HUB in the Republic of Moldova. In this context, EU Ambassador to Chisinau Janis Mazeiks said that Brussels will continue to provide support to our country to strengthen its resilience in this area.

Dialogue and transfer of experience provide opportunities to develop capacities to anticipate and identify potential phenomena that could undermine strategic segments of the security sector, said SIS Director Alexandru Musteață at the sixth operational meeting of the Security Hub.* "We are facing attempts to destabilise the situation in the country. We see that several instruments of a hybrid war have been activated, the subject of hybrid threats is becoming more and more emphasized and discussed on this platform. We have energy dependency, economic crisis, disinformation, agents of influence, calls for civic disobedience and much more. Thus, the aim is to increase pressure on the state leadership, influence decisions, undermine national security, the rule of law, economic and social processes, sabotage our European path and return the country to certain areas of influence against our national interests"*, said Alexandru Musteață.

With the launch of the Security Hub, the European Union reiterated its support for the Republic of Moldova, a country that plays an important role in the current security architecture, said the European Union's ambassador in Chisinau, Janis Mazeiks. According to the official, security challenges are evolving and a comprehensive approach is needed. "We underline the €40 million assistance approved by the EU for resilience and peace and the civilian partnership mission that was sent to Moldova the other day. In the areas of crisis management and hybrid threats, cyber security and other areas will be the focus of this mission. We are also continuing cooperation on the domestic front. Moldova must continue to strengthen the capacities of institutions, modernise equipment and processes applied", said Janis Mazeiks.

At the first meeting of the Internal Security and Border Management HUB, which took place in June 2022, it was agreed to focus on trafficking in firearms, illegal trafficking in migrants, human beings, drugs, as well as cybercrime.
