Council of Europe launches the second phase of the "Education for Democracy in the Republic of Moldova" project

The Council of Europe launched the second phase of the "Education for Democracy in the Republic of Moldova" project. It will allow the further study of the discipline "Education for society", included in the school curriculum as early as 2018. The participants of the national conference titled "Promotion of democratic values through education", organized by the Council of Europe, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova, discussed the modernization of the education process, the curriculum review, the gradual implementation of the discipline "Education for Society" and other aspects.

"Education for Society" is one of the subjects studied in educational institutions in our country and reflects the principles of a prosperous society and contributes to the development of the democratic culture of young people, the Minister of Education, Anatolie Topală, said during the conference.

"One of the activities carried out in the second part of the project is to explain to the students as much as possible what a democratic state represents, what human rights represent or what the democratic processes are in a society, so that together we can create a better society good for all of us", said the Minister of Education, Anatolie Topală.

According to the representatives of the Chisinau Office of the Council of Europe, the synchronization of the education system in the Republic of Moldova with the standards of the European Union aims to improve the formal and informal education of young people in our country.

The interim deputy head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, Giulia Re, stated that the project has a strategic value in the democratization of a society and the Council of Europe, together with other development partners of the Republic of Moldova, will continue to finance this program. The final goal of the project is to support young people to develop the necessary skills to become engaged citizens, the European official said.

"The Education for Democracy Project is a conceptual model for democratic culture, which describes values, attitudes, skills, knowledge and a better understanding that students of different levels of formal education should have in order to promote democracy", said Giulia Re.

The students present at the event are of the opinion that the Education for Society discipline helps them learn democratic values better, in order to become integral and responsible citizens in the future.

"Education for society really cultivates in us a civic responsibility, which is crucial for a balanced, integral citizen of our society". The Council of Europe project "Education for democracy in the Republic of Moldova" is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and provides support to the Ministry of Education and Research in the implementation of the curriculum for the discipline "Education for Society".
