Maia Sandu for "The Economist": The war in Ukraine dramatically changed the world, but not in the way those who ordered it would have expected

The war started by the Russian Federation in Ukraine dramatically changed the world, but not in the way those who ordered the war would have expected, said the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, in an editorial for the British publication "The Economist". At the same time, the head of state declared that those who bet that they can change the development perspective of the Republic of Moldova made a wrong bet.

In the editorial for the publication "The Economist", Maia Sandu stated that those who started the war in Ukraine hoped to weaken Europe's collective security, but strengthened it even more, thanks to the fact that democratic forces joined their efforts .

The head of state mentioned, among other things, that the Republic of Moldova fights against the hybrid offensive by strengthening resilience in all areas, by reforming institutions and getting closer to the EU. Energy interconnections with Romania and other European countries have helped our country resist Russian gas blackmail, access new energy sources, and keep the lights on and homes warm during a difficult winter. The Republic of Moldova reoriented its exports to new markets and maintained a functional economy. Two thirds of trade is directed towards EU countries, the head of state said.

In another matter, Maia Sandu stated that the measures to counter disinformation were also intensified. Law enforcement has exposed the schemes behind the paid protests, orchestrated by Russian proxies, who are trying to remotely influence and incite violence on our streets.

Regarding the EU accession process, President Maia Sandu assured that this move is irreversible. For decades, the EU has acted to maintain peace in most of Europe, bringing greater social cohesion, democracy and respect for human rights. For the past 20 years, the EU has anchored the peaceful, prosperous and democratic development of our country.

The decision to officially apply for EU membership in March 2022 was a clear choice for us, Maia Sandu said, adding that the call of democracy will triumph over the oppression of authoritarianism. "We have a lot to do before we can join the bloc, but we are determined", stated the president Maia Sandu in the editorial for the publication "The Economist".
