The meeting in Reykjavik will emphasize the role of the Council of Europe in the current geopolitical context, marked by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Today, on the first day of the Summit, there will be a discussion, at a round table, co-chaired by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, together with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, about protecting democracy in times of trial, risks, resilience and re-engagement. There will also be a working meeting "United for Ukraine" with the participation of all heads of state and government.

At the end of the meeting in Iceland, which ends its mandate as the country president of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, will announce the establishment of the international register of damages caused by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, in which Romania will participate as a founding state. Tomorrow, at the end of the meeting, a statement is expected to be adopted that reconfirms the role, in particular, of the Council of Europe in European and international context, reads the international media.

We remind you that the Council of Europe was among the first international institutions to react concretely by excluding the Russian Federation from among the member states, after the military aggression against Ukraine began.

The summit will represent a historic opportunity for European leaders to reaffirm their shared commitment to the core values of the Council of Europe and to reorient their mission in light of new threats to human rights and democracy and to further support Ukraine through concrete measures to contribute to justice for the victims of Russian aggression.

The Summit is also expected to spur initiatives to address emerging challenges to democracy and human rights, including the environment and artificial intelligence.

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, on the sidelines of the Summit, will have several meetings with heads of state and government to advance the European agenda of our country.
