Ukraine's President may come to Summit on 1 June
Peace, security and defence will be the main topic on the agenda of the European Political Community Summit to be held in Bulboaca on 1 June, Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu told an international conference on the expectations of the event in Chisinau today. According to the official, at least two more themes are to be identified.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky could also attend the event, says Kiev-based expert Leo Litra.
The summit will first of all discuss the impact of the Russian Federation's war in Ukraine on the situation in Europe, but also Moldova's challenges, as our country is hosting the event, said Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu.
"This is the most important foreign policy event for our country. It is the moment when we will have around 50 delegations in Chisinau, our objective is to strengthen, to fortify the role of the Republic of Moldova in the family of European states. This Summit gives us the opportunity to make up for many shortcomings that we have had as a society and as a country in our interaction with external partners over the last 30 years and to make an investment in the future of our relations with democratic and free states in Europe", said Nicu Popescu.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's presence at the 1 June summit is timely for several reasons, said Kiev-based New Europe Centre analyst Leo Litra. In his opinion, it will not be known until the day of the event whether the Ukrainian leader will arrive in Bulboaca.
"44 leaders of the countries will be present, these leaders will have the opportunity to talk for the first time. That is why it is very important that Vladimir Zelensky also discusses in order to organise support for Ukraine within this community", said Leo Litra.
The first Summit meeting took place in October in Prague and focused on energy and security issues. The next meetings, after the one hosted by our country, will take place in Spain and then in the UK.
