Germany considers tightening border controls to halt irregular migration

Germany is experiencing increasing numbers of irregular border crossings in 2023, and the government is considering some restrictive measures in order to address the surge.

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has announced plans to intensify security at border controls as well as calling on European Union partners to construct asylum centres around the bloc. It is estimated that almost 20,000 have entered the country in the first three months of the year – 50 per cent more than in 2022, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

On the other hand, about 50 humanitarian organisations in Germany have protested these plans, also urging the Chancellor to give up these plans, highlighting this would disrespect refugee protection laws and leave room for humanitarian violations. Police representatives reveal that since Germany has tightened measures at its border with Austria, which is the most active one, more people are coming from the Polish border.

So far this year, about 4,000 irregular crossings have been recorded, with the majority of those coming from Syria, Afghanistan, and Turkey, with an increase being noticed among people coming from Belarus recently.
