Klaus Iohannis: Integration in the Schengen area remains a national strategic objective

Romania's entry together with Bulgaria into Schengen is a "considerably better" option and a separate entry, as Austria and the Netherlands want, will never be accepted, said the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.

According to him, Romania is looking for solutions for a positive vote given to both neighboring states. Thus, Romania's accession to the Schengen area remains the main objective, declared the leader from Bucharest.

"Integration in the Schengen area remains a national strategic objective. We have two problems, the attitude of Austria, which is reserved, and two, the vote of the Netherlands, was mixed. For Romania it was yes, for Bulgaria it was a half no", declared Klaus Iohannis.

Radio Moldova recalls that tomorrow the president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, will participate in the meeting of the European Council in Brussels, the main topics being the situation in Ukraine and the progress made in the energy field. President Klaus Iohannis intends, however, to put on the agenda the subject of Romania's accession to the Schengen area, although a new vote on this topic will only be able to be cast in the future Justice and Internal Affairs Council.

On December 8, within the Council of Justice and Internal Affairs, Austria and the Netherlands did not vote for the acceptance of Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen area.
