Diversification of energy sources, including for the Republic of Moldova, one of the topics on the agenda of the EPC Summit
Energy security and climate change will be among the topics of discussion at the second European Political Community Summit, which will take place on Thursday, 1 June, in Bulboaca. The topic is a topical one not only in Moldova, but also throughout Europe, said Energy Minister Victor Parlicov at the public debate organised by IPN Agency. In this context, energy expert Sergiu Tofilat said that our country will no longer be able to be blackmailed by the Russian Federation because it is no longer so important on the European gas market.
At the European Political Community Summit, a working group will discuss the diversification of energy sources, including for Moldova, said Energy Minister Victor Parlicov. According to the official, our country has become a contributor to energy security.
"In recent years, there have been some radical changes in the security of Europe's supply of resources, first of all on the dimension of natural gas supply, given that following the Russian Federation's military aggression of Ukraine, the presence of Russian gas on the European market has decreased dramatically. We are becoming a country that is not only a beneficiary of the security system of supplying energy resources created on the European continent, but also a contributor to security."
Energy expert Sergiu Tofilat noted that the centralised gas purchasing mechanism initiated by the European Union allows small consumers in particular to benefit from competitive prices.
*"I think it is an important step in strengthening energy security and obtaining a competitive gas price for Moldovan consumers that we, not being an EU member country, benefit from this centralised gas purchasing mechanism. If we look at how the situation on the energy market has changed after the war in Ukraine, first of all from March 2022, together with Ukraine we can buy energy from the EU market, which was not possible before." * As a reminder, the European Commission announced two weeks ago the launch of the first joint purchase of natural gas in the European Union. The new system is designed to give up Russian gas and is open to both EU and non-EU companies, including Moldova. As of last week, our country had submitted bids totalling more than 11 billion cubic metres on the AggregateEU platform.
