MEP: Sanctions regime against Russian and Moldovan oligarchs to be applied in the coming weeks

The sanctions regime against Russian and Moldovan oligarchs will be applied by the European Union in the coming weeks, MEP Siegfried Muresan told Radio Moldova.

According to the official, people who try to destabilise Moldova must be sanctioned, as they pose a threat to both our country and the European Union.

"This regime will be implemented now, in an objective, transparent manner, and the sanctions will start to take effect in the next period, in the coming weeks. I am pleased that in addition to the United States and the United Kingdom, which have already implemented these sanctions, the European Union has joined and now Canada has announced that it wants to join. We want a stable, secure Republic of Moldova in our neighbourhood", said the MEP.

The European Union is applying for the first time a new sanctions regime for destabilising the Republic of Moldova. The list includes five people: the leader of the "Șor" Party, Ilan Șor, the deputy of the same party, Marina Tauber, the fugitive businessman and former politician Vlad Plahotniuc, the leader of the PACE Party, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc, and the Russian businessman Igor Ceaika, considered a close associate of the former president and leader of the Socialist Party, Igor Dodon.
