The country's President, Maia Sandu, has sent her condolences to the people of India and all those affected by the tragic train accident in Odisha. "Moldova stands in solidarity with India. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families at this difficult time," the head of state wrote on her Twitter account.
A serious train accident occurred in the town of Balasore, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, involving three trains. Rescuers in India are still trying to find survivors. According to the latest figures, at least 250 people are dead and more than 1,000 injured. Rescuers expect the death toll to rise further.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. The Indian authorities have today declared a day of national mourning and announced that financial compensation will be offered to the families of the accident victims.
This is India's worst rail accident in two decades.
