Oleg Serebrian: The settlement of the Transnistrian conflict depends largely on the evolution of the war in Ukraine
The evolution of the war in Ukraine depends on the settlement of the Transnistrian file, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian said during a broadcast on Voice of Bessarabia. According to the official, today, in the context of the war in Ukraine, all the negotiation formats of the frozen conflicts in the Black Sea area are blocked.
"The negotiation format for the Transnistrian settlement is in the same kind of technical deadlock as all the negotiation formats of the frozen conflicts in the Black Sea area at the moment. I can say that in the case of the Transnistrian conflict, at least, the 1+1 format is still working and President Zelenski is absolutely right that the future of not only the Transnistrian conflict but also other conflicts in the region depends very much, if not entirely, on the evolution of the war in Ukraine."
Negotiations in the Transnistrian settlement process in the 5+2 format have been blocked since 2019 and cannot be resumed due to the outbreak of war in Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Under these circumstances, the authorities in Chisinau are holding talks with Tiraspol in the 1+1 format.
