Former Ukrainian judge Mikola Ceaus sentenced to 10 years in prison

Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court has found former judge of the Dnipro court in Kiev Mikola Ceaus guilty of bribery and sentenced him to 10 years in prison, Ukrainska Pravda reports. He was immediately detained in the courtroom.

In 2016, employees of Ukraine's National Anticorruption Bureau caught Mikola Ceaus red-handed taking bribes. However, the judge soon left Ukraine, as Ukrainian MPs hesitated to vote to lift his immunity.

In 2017, Mikola Ceaus, accused of taking $150,000 in bribes, was found in the Republic of Moldova, where he had long awaited a decision on whether to grant him political asylum. In the spring of 2021, he was allegedly kidnapped by unknown persons in Chisinau, which he wrote about on social media. In July, the former judge was detained in a town in the Ukrainian region of Vinnitsa.
