Maia Sandu: Punishments for those who corrupt voters will be tougher

Punishments for people who corrupt voters in electoral campaigns should be made tougher, President Maia Sandu proposed today at a youth event in Comrat. She also stressed that citizens who accept money in exchange for voting should be punished.

"Buying and selling votes is not democracy, it is corruption. We will come up with proposals to significantly toughen the penalties for those who give money to buy votes, and secondly, for those who accept money to sell their vote. State institutions are not yet strong enough to be able to prove these things, and even when they manage to gather this evidence, by the time they reach the court, the event is consummated, because the elections have already taken place," said Maia Sandu.

Maia Sandu said that although the elections in Gagauzia were rigged, the Chisinau authorities will comply with the decisions of the Comrat Court of Appeal and the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia, which validated the new Bashkan of ATU Gagauzia, Evghenia Gutul.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dorin Recean also stated that the Moldovan Government will work with local elected representatives, who represent the interests of the citizens of the Gagauz autonomy.
