Cereal production this year is lower by 45 percent, below the average of the last five years, corn being the most affected, it is stated in a report made by the representatives of the Organization UN for Food and Agriculture in the Republic of Moldova. According to them, the severe drought, the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine had a strong impact on the agri-food sector in our country.
The Republic of Moldova relies on the support of foreign investors in the agricultural field, and external partners continue to help our farmers in the country to be able to develop a resistant, sustainable and green agri-food system, said FAO representative in the Republic of Moldova, Raimund Jehle. According to the agricultural expert, the Chisinau authorities must continue the fight against climate change and continue to attract foreign investors. Raimund Jehle also added that, this year, the corn crop was 60 percent lower than the average of the last 5 years.
"The findings of this report highlight the seriousness of the drought's impact, particularly on planted areas. As indicated in the report, their production has significantly decreased by about 43% compared to the average over the past five years. Maize fell by as much as 60 percent. We saw a drop in sunflower production, which was hit with a 26% reduction," Raimund Jehle reports.
