U.S. suspends 31% tariffs on Moldovan exports temporarily

The United States has temporarily suspended the 31% additional tariffs recently imposed on Moldovan products exported to the U.S. market.
This was confirmed by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, which stated that, for now, only the general 10% tariff, applied to all foreign goods, will remain in effect starting April 9.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that the increased tariffs would be postponed for 90 days for more than 75 countries that "have not taken retaliatory measures against the United States" and are willing to negotiate.
Until now, the Republic of Moldova has enjoyed tariff exemptions for its exports to the U.S.
It is worth noting that in 2024, Moldova's exports to the U.S. accounted for 2.5% of the total, or $90 million, while imports made up 1.5%, totaling $135 million of total imports.
Our country primarily exports the following categories of products:
- Dessert wines, which made up 48% of total exports to the U.S. in 2024;
- Fruit juices, particularly apple juice, where Moldova held a significant market share (14%);
- Plastic products and transport items (9%), alcohol (5%), bakery products (2%), and textiles (3%).
