Dacian Ciolos: EU states must reach a consensus for the European Parliament to approve new financial support for Moldova

The European Parliament intends to approve financial aid for the Republic of Moldova under the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument recently announced by the European Commission, MEP Dacian Ciolos told Moldova 1 TV station. At the same time, there must be a consensus among EU Member States, as these financial means come from national budgets, Dacian Ciolos said.

"The money comes from national budgets and especially from the Member States that are net contributors to the EU budget and have a higher share of contributions to this budget. It is important that, beyond the will of Parliament, there is also the willingness of the Member States in the Council to ensure the budgetary flow so that this money actually reaches the EU budget for the following year. Of course, it is important for the Republic of Moldova to continue the reforms, to have this argument that the Republic of Moldova needs the financial support, that it deserves this support, that the money can be spent transparently, that the Government is ready to use this money effectively".

On 20 June, the European Commission revised the multiannual financial framework, which includes a proposal to set up a facility for Ukraine of around €600 million. Part of this amount could be redistributed for assistance programmes over the next three years to other neighbouring countries, including Moldova.
