Maia Sandu explains why she didn't attend the ceremony of swearing in of the Bashkan of Gagauzia

One day after the inauguration of the new Bashkan of Gagauzia, President Maia Sandu explained why she did not attend the event in Comrat. She told the press that the authorities in Chisinau do not go to the swearing-in of a person who is supported by a criminal group.

"I don't think it's right to go to the inauguration of a person who during the election campaign was supported by a criminal group and is part of a political party that has since been declared unconstitutional."

At the same time, Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu said that cooperation with the authorities of ATU Gagauzia will be pragmatic and in accordance with the law.

On the other hand, experts believe that relations between Chisinau and Comrat will become more complicated once Evghenia Gutul takes office as Bashkan.

Evghenia Guțul was officially sworn in yesterday as governor of ATU Gagauzia. Dorin Recean, Igor Grosu and PAS deputies announced yesterday that they would not attend the ceremony.

The authorities have complained of electoral violations and fraud in the elections for the position of Bashkan. The NAC and anti-corruption prosecutors have raided several representatives of Yevgenia Gutka's staff in a case of voter corruption. After the second round of voting on 14 May, masks also raided the offices of the electoral council and the Comrat court, where they collected envelopes containing electoral lists. The CNA later said that there was reasonable suspicion that deceased persons or persons abroad had been registered as having exercised their right to vote.

The Central Electoral Commission has initiated eight contravention proceedings on the facts of illegal financing of electoral contestants, who received donations from individuals exceeding the maximum limit set by law for cash donations.
