Romanian ship damaged in Russian attack on Ukrainian Danube port of Reni
A Romanian ship has been damaged following a Russian attack on the Ukrainian port of Reni on the Danube, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest reports. According to preliminary data obtained by representatives of the Romanian consular office in Odessa from the Ukrainian authorities, the ship suffered minor damage and continued its voyage. At the same time, representatives of the Ministry of Defence across the Prut state that there is no possibility of direct military threats to Romania's territory or territorial waters at this time.
The Ministry of National Defence in Bucharest strongly condemns the war of aggression unleashed by the Russian Federation in Ukraine and, together with similar structures in allied countries, will continue to strengthen the common defence on the entire eastern flank and deter any aggression against allied territory, Constantin Spînu, head of the Ministry's Information and Public Relations Directorate, told Euronews.
"With regard to the security situation near Romania's borders, the assessments of the responsible structures of the Ministry of National Defence do not show, at this moment, the possibility of direct military threats to the national territory or to Romania's territorial waters," Constantin Spînu said.
At the time of the attack, there were six Romanian ships in the port of Reni, said the captain of the port of Galati, Vlăduț Brînză.
"The six ships, after the attack, contacted Port Control Galati and asked for permission to enter Romanian national waters. We found as a solution the possibility of anchoring on the right bank in the area of nautical mile 74. All six ships are safely at anchor," said Vlăduț Brînză.
On Sunday night, missiles and drones launched by Russian troops hit the ports of Reni and Ismail on the Danube near the Romanian-Ukrainian border. According to military correspondents, oil tanks, weapons depots and NATO equipment were attacked. At the same time, the military command in southern Ukraine reported that a grain warehouse was destroyed and four employees were injured. The Foreign Ministry across the Prut reports that no Romanian citizens were injured in the attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
