Veronica Dragalin: The conviction of Ilan Shor, one of the progresses made in the "Bank Fraud" case

The final conviction of Ilan Shor was one of the advances made in the high-profile "Bank Fraud" case, said Veronica Dragalin, head of the Anti Corruption Prosecutor's Office. At a press conference held on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of her mandate, the head of the Anti-Corruption Office also said that the authorities have taken all the necessary steps to request Ilan Shor's extradition from Israel so that he can serve his sentence in Moldova.

"The case was referred to court in 2016. It was one of the first cases sent to trial in the "Bank Fraud". The Court of Appeals' decision establishes that Ilan Shor is guilty of this crime, which caused a damage of more than five billion lei. In addition, several episodes of the "Bank Fraud" have been sent to trial in the last year. Last autumn, Vladimir Andronache was arrested, and a few weeks ago the episode involving Vladimir Plahotniuc was sent to trial. This is the first case to be brought against Vladimir Plahotniuc. The charges against him are creation of a criminal organisation, fraud and money laundering," said Veronica Dragalin.

In spring this year, the Chisinau Court of Appeal sentenced fugitive Ilan Shor to 15 years in prison. He left the Republic of Moldova in 2019. Recently, the party he led was declared unconstitutional, and yesterday, MPs approved in final reading a draft law that provides that members of political parties declared unconstitutional will not be able to participate in elections for a period of three to five years after the Constitutional Court's ruling.
