Kiev's plan for peace restoration to be discussed at meeting in Saudi Arabia

A meeting of heads of state advisers and foreign ministry representatives will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday and Sunday to discuss in particular Kiev's proposed plan for restoring peace in Ukraine. The meeting, to which Russia has not been invited, will be attended by some 40 countries, including the United States, European countries, Egypt, Turkey, as well as Brazil and India, which are close to Moscow in the BRICS group. China has also confirmed its participation in the talks.

Ahead of the Jeddah meeting, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski said that this negotiating platform was very important for both his country's and international security. He also said that global food security depended on the speedy implementation of the "peace formula".

"It is very important because on issues like food security, the fate of millions of people in Africa, Asia and other parts of the world depends directly on how fast the world will implement the peace formula. I am grateful to Saudi Arabia for this platform for negotiations. We are moving step by step towards the Global Peace Summit. Eliminating all threats created by Russia to Ukrainian and global security means restoring peace to international relations and stability to global life," said the Kiev leader.

Ukrainian and Western diplomats hope the Jeddah meeting will agree on Kiev's proposed peace plan. It calls for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and the restoration of the country's internationally recognised borders, including the Crimean peninsula.

But a White House spokesman stressed on Friday that the Jeddah meeting will not be a "peace negotiation" between Ukraine and Russia and that Washington does not expect "tangible results".
