The electoral period for the general local elections on 5 November begins
On 7 August, the electoral period for the general local elections of 5 November begins for the nomination and registration of candidates for mayor and local councillors, according to the timetable approved by the Central Electoral Commission. The actual election campaign starts on 6 October, when election campaigning for candidates is allowed.
The timetable for the organisation and conduct of this autumn's local elections includes 99 actions divided into 12 chapters. According to the programme, the election period starts on 7 August and lasts until the day the election results are confirmed by the competent bodies, but it cannot last more than 120 days, explained CEC Secretary Alexandr Berlinschii.
"We have different terms when we talk about the second level. I remind you that the deadline of September 6 is the deadline for nominating candidates for mayor of Chisinau municipality, mayor of Balti municipality as well as candidates for second level councillor in 32 districts. It also indicates the deadline for nominating candidates for elective offices for the first level electoral constituencies. No earlier than 26 September, candidates for key positions in the 896 constituencies can be nominated. On 6 October, the election campaign or election agitation will start", stressed Alexandr Berlinschii.
During the election period, first-level constituency electoral councils and polling station electoral offices are being set up. The Central Election Commission determines the design of ballot papers and the stamps used by electoral bodies.
Until the registration of the electoral contestant, i.e. during the election period, the party, independent candidate or electoral bloc may not organise any propaganda activities to convince the electorate. Candidates can register as an electoral contestant until 6 October. After their registration, the election campaign will start, which is conducted with the aim of getting voters to cast their votes for the election of a particular candidate.
There are approximately 3.3 million voters registered in the State Register of Voters. Most of them, more than 650 thousand, are in the municipality of Chisinau, and the fewest are registered in the districts of Basarabeasca, Dubasari and Dondușeni, where the number of citizens entitled to vote reaches up to 30 thousand.
So far, several political parties have already presented their candidates for Chisinau mayor, including the National Alternative Movement, the Action and Solidarity Party, the Dignity and Truth Platform, the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova, the Coalition for Unity and Welfare, together with the Home We Build Europe Party, the PSRM, Democracy at Home, the Liberal Party, the Social-Political Movement "League of Cities and Communes" and the European Social Democratic Party.
The last general local elections were held in 2019.
