Moldovan farmers threaten new protests
Moldovan farmers could take to the streets again from 14 August if the government fails to meet their demands, the Farmers' Force Association says. Farmers cite a "disastrous" situation in the sector, characterised by derisory new crop prices, exorbitant production costs and pressure from creditors.
They are also calling for a moratorium until 31 December on the payment of debts owed by micro, small and medium-sized farmers, who mainly grow cereals and oilseeds, and for the creation of special customs corridors for the export of products in the summer and autumn. Contacted by Radio Moldova, government spokesman Daniel Voda said that the executive does not yet comment on the farmers' intention.
Moldovan farmers will discuss the aid they could receive on Friday, July 11, at a meeting to be held in Galati, Romania, with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and the European Union.
