China warns of action after Taiwan vice president visits New York
China has vowed to take strong action in response to Taiwan's vice president's visit to New York. William Lai is making a brief stop in New York on his way to Paraguay, one of the few countries to maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, reports the BBC.
In a social media post, Vice President Lai described New York City as one of freedom and democracy.
China has warned that it is watching the official's US visit closely, and Taiwan fears Beijing will use the visit as a pretext to conduct military exercises around the island.
China regards Taiwan as its own territory and reacts angrily to any meetings between Taiwanese and American officials.
