Fuel oil leak at Termoelectrica plant raises concerns about management
A commission of inquiry has presented its conclusions on the incident in the fuel oil household at the Termoelectrica plant in Chisinau, Moldova. The commission found that a steam pipe had cracked and an insignificant amount of fuel oil had leaked out, about 100-200 kg.
The acting director of Termoelectrica, Iurie Razlovan, said that the operators acted correctly when the leak occurred. However, he said that the company did not handle the situation correctly afterwards. The fuel oil should have been collected and stored properly, but it was not.
Razlovan also rejected reports that the fuel oil was of poor quality. He said that all the documentation from the company's accounts has been reviewed and no shortcomings have been found.
The Environment Agency fined Termoelectrica for the incident. The company has also been investigated by the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office.
The leak is not considered to be an environmental catastrophe, but it is a serious matter. The company has been ordered to take measures to prevent future leaks.
The incident has raised concerns about the management of Termoelectrica. The company has been criticized for its handling of the situation and for the quality of its fuel oil.
The government has called for the resignation of Termoelectrica's management. The company's former interim general director, Vasile Leu, has resigned and Iurie Razlovan has been appointed in his place.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
