Gagauz MPs seek revision of VAT refund draft law

Gagauz People's Assembly deputies are seeking revision of a draft law that would see economic agents in the autonomy refunded VAT from the local budget, rather than the national budget.

The issue was discussed at public consultations, with representatives from the Ministry of Finance, members of Parliament and the Gagauz People's Assembly taking part.

Local deputies from Comrat argued that the draft law would not be in line with some provisions of the Constitution, and could have negative political consequences for the region.

Gheorghe Leiciu, deputy chairman of the Gagauz People's Assembly, said: "Now we are trying to be presented with a situation in which Gagauzia lives at the expense of other regions of our country, this is unfair from all points of view."

He added that the proposed measures would affect economic operators in the region.

One of the authors of the legislative initiative, Radu Marian, MP of the Action and Solidarity Party, said that economic operators would not suffer as a result of the implementation of the project.

He said the aim of the project was to create more fairness and equity in tax administration between different localities in the country.

The proposals made at the public consultations will be discussed by the authors of the initiative when preparing the draft law for the second reading.
