Moldova to introduce licensing system for doctors
A licensing system for doctors could be introduced in Moldova, says Health Minister Ala Nemerenco. According to her, the evaluation of medical professionals every five years would allow professional doctors with attitudes and skills to remain in the system. She gives assurances that the mechanism will not affect the shortage of medical professionals.
The licensing of doctors is a common practice in European countries, and the introduction of such an evaluation system will exclude toxic people from the field, Health Minister Ala Nemerenco told a Voice of Bessarabia programme. She explained that the evaluation of doctors every five years will not lead to a shortage of medical staff, on the contrary, the best and most professional employees will remain working.
"We will introduce a licensing system, because today every doctor gets his diploma and until he retires no one has any questions about his work. Everywhere in the world, every five years, every doctor has to prove some results of his work, that he is of good faith, that he works on himself, that he absolutely passes all the training courses. So a dossier is put together and a conclusion is drawn: you are demoted from your post, you are sent to some training that you will pay for out of your own money. When it really is someone who brings a dose of harmfulness into the system, I believe that with or without him, the loss is not great. Usually, the system keeps on strong, good, professional cadres," said Ala Nemerenco.

The minister also said that in some districts of Moldova, such as Falesti, Rezina and Vulkanesti, there is a shortage of family doctors. This year, only 16 family doctors are being trained out of the 200 needed. Thus, Ala Nemerenco stressed that more measures will be proposed to support and motivate young specialists and doctors in the country.
Support measures for young medical specialists include an increase in the allowance, which is currently worth 120 thousand lei.
After the next budget rectification for 2023 in autumn, doctors' salaries will be increased, after being raised by 10 percent last year.
