Around 400 prosecutors to attend General Assembly of Prosecutors in Moldova
Around 400 prosecutors are expected to attend the General Assembly of Prosecutors in Moldova next week, Acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu said on Friday.
Munteanu said that he and the Prosecutor's Office have high expectations for the forum and that he is confident that it will help to establish a functional Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) in the shortest possible time. The SCP is responsible for overseeing the prosecutorial system in Moldova.
Munteanu also said that the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office is to be reformed and will be responsible for prosecuting criminal cases. He said that this will allow the office to focus on investigating cases of grand corruption.
"The goal is to create an autonomous institution that has the real capacity to fight serious crime and corruption," Munteanu said.
The acting prosecutor general also said that there are currently more than 100 vacancies in the Prosecutor's Office system, which is negatively affecting its work. He said that one of the missions of the SCP is to fill these vacancies.
The General Assembly of Prosecutors will be held on August 23. At the meeting, new prosecutors will be elected to the SCP from among candidates who have passed the integrity test.
