New teacher bonus system announced in Moldova

The Ministry of Education has announced that starting with the 2023 school year, primary, secondary, and high school teachers will be remunerated on the basis of a new method of calculating specific bonuses.

Within the limits of their budgets, school administrations will be able to grant higher bonuses for directing, checking pupils' written work, administering the offices, and activities involving children with special educational needs (SEN). The bonuses will make up a total of no more than 10% of the annual budget for teachers' salaries.

For example, a teacher with a class of 35 pupils will be able to receive a maximum of 880 lei in extra pay for directing, compared with around 560 lei previously. The amount of the bonus will be determined by each institution depending on the available resources.

The specific bonus for headteachers will be granted for the actual time worked during the school year (from 1 September this year to 31 August the following year), including during holidays. The bonus for checking written work, office administration, and work with pupils with special needs can be granted for time actually worked between 1 September and 31 May, including during the autumn, winter, spring, and Easter holidays.

The calculation of specific allowances will be made annually in relation to the salary of the primary school teacher and the secondary school teacher. Calculations will be based on the number of pupils registered on 1 October of each school year.
