Zelensky visits Sweden to discuss security cooperation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Sweden on Saturday, with intentions to meet the country's Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, King Carl Gustaf, and other Swedish officials, as conveyed directly by Kiev's leader through his Telegram account, as reported by EFE, according to Agerpres.
"Olena and I have arrived in Sweden," Zelensky wrote. "Our primary task is to strengthen our air and land defence, foster bilateral cooperation, and enhance Euro-Atlantic common security," continued Zelensky in the message he conveyed upon his arrival in the Nordic country.
This visit comes nearly a year and a half after the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and at a time when Sweden is on the brink of joining NATO, following the example of its neighbour, Finland.
Shortly after hostilities began in February 2022, Sweden abandoned its doctrine of not supplying arms to countries in conflict and provided Kyiv with thousands of anti-tank weapons, as recalled by AFP.
In July, Turkey dropped its opposition to Sweden's entry into the Atlantic Alliance, giving the green light to Stockholm's membership aspirations.
As for Moscow, it believes that Sweden's NATO accession will have "negative consequences" for Russia's security, and Russia intends to take "foreseen and planned" measures in response."
