Popescu expressed his hope that the progress will serve as a solid basis for the start of accession negotiations by the end of this year.

"I have expressed my firm conviction that the future of Moldova and Ukraine lies in the great European family - an area of freedom, peace and prosperity," Popescu said at a videoconference on EU accession.

The Moldovan minister also stressed the importance of closer cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine on the subject of EU accession, including through exchanges of experience of staff involved in European integration processes.

Popescu also reiterated Moldova's firm support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

He stressed that Moldova will continue to offer Ukraine all possible assistance, both bilaterally and within international organisations.
