Moldova offers solidarity to Greece in fight against wildfires
The Republic of Moldova will send 56 firefighters to Greece in the coming days to help fight the devastating wildfires that have been raging in the country for the past week. The announcement was made by Moldovan President Maia Sandu after a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.
"We stand in solidarity with friendly countries when needed," Sandu said. "The firefighters we are sending are experienced and well-trained, and I am confident that they will be able to make a significant contribution to the firefighting effort."
The wildfires have killed two people and forced the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes. The fires are being fanned by strong winds and hot weather, making it difficult for firefighters to contain them.
In addition to Moldova, several other countries have also offered to help Greece, including Romania, France, and Italy.
The European Union has also activated its emergency response mechanism, which will allow Greece to receive additional assistance from other EU countries.
