Moldova's President Maia Sandu hails Ukraine as a symbol of resistance and hope
Moldova's President Maia Sandu has sent a congratulatory message to Ukraine on its Independence Day, saying that Moldova "looks up to it with deep respect, not just as a neighbour, but as a symbol of resistance and hope."
In her message, Sandu also thanked Ukraine for "its strength in defending peace and security in the region."
"Today, Ukraine is celebrating its Independence Day with dignity," Sandu said. "Independence is when citizens can decide their own future, when they have the freedom to build their own country as they see fit. Ukrainians, through their courage and boundless determination, remind us of this truth every day. We are eternally grateful for the strength with which Ukraine is defending peace and security in the region, becoming a bastion of freedom for millions of Europeans. On this day, my hope is that peace will return to the homes of Ukrainians as soon as possible, and that Ukraine's Independence Day will never again be overshadowed by war and suffering. Slava Ukraini!"
Moldova's Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu also spoke out in support of Ukraine, saying that Moldova is "today safe from any military danger thanks to Ukraine."
"Today is an important day for our Ukrainian friends - Independence Day," Popescu said. "It is a truly symbolic holiday, given that Russia is waging an unjust war against Ukraine and is threatening its independence and territorial integrity. On this day, we reaffirm our unwavering support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders. Moldova is today safe from any military danger thanks to the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian army, for which we are grateful. We will continue to provide Ukraine with all possible assistance, both bilaterally and through international organisations. We send our neighbours and friends the message that we are with them and we wish them peace and prosperity."
