Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who chaired the meeting, said that Moldova must align itself with the global human rights agenda and ensure that all citizens are treated equally, regardless of their race, religion, gender, or disability.

He also stressed the need to update legislation on human rights and ensure that it is implemented effectively.

"We must intensify our efforts to ensure that the level of human rights protection in Transnistria increases," Recean said. "It is our responsibility to encourage civil society to be more active and to launch more democratic processes. We also need to create a cultural change in society regarding the equal treatment of all citizens."

The meeting of the Council for Human Rights also heard a report on the implementation of the National Action Plan on Human Rights for 2018-2022. The report recommends, among other things, the development of a new human rights policy document.

Members of the Council also called on Moldova to prepare better for the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review, which is the most comprehensive human rights assessment exercise carried out by the UN. The fourth cycle will take place in 2026-2027.
